Dental scaling – effective removal of tartar

· mmarczuk

What is dental scaling?

Dental scaling is a professional procedure for removing tartar, performed in a dental office. It involves removing mineralized plaque using specialized tools—manual or ultrasonic dental scalers. The device generates high-frequency vibrations that break the tartar into smaller fragments, allowing for their effective removal.

Why is it important to remove tartar regularly?

Regular dental scaling is essential for maintaining oral health and fresh breath. If left untreated, tartar promotes bacterial growth and can lead to:

  • gum inflammation (gingivitis),
  • periodontal disease (periodontitis),
  • tooth decay,
  • tooth discoloration.

How often should scaling be performed?

It is recommended to have scaling performed 1–2 times a year. In the case of gum problems, such as inflammation, the dentist may recommend more frequent treatments—up to 3–6 times a year. The frequency of tartar removal is determined on an individual basis and depends on the rate of plaque buildup, hygiene habits, and the patient’s saliva composition.

Can tartar be completely avoided?

Unfortunately, tartar can develop in anyone, regardless of daily oral hygiene. Factors that increase the risk of tartar formation include:

  • high mineralization of saliva,
  • poor dietary habits,
  • inadequate tooth brushing.

That is why regular visits to the dentist and professional scaling are crucial for maintaining a healthy and beautiful smile.
